Oktoberfest in Latinamerica and Samba Carnaval in Finland

 
It was more or less 10 years ago I had the possibility to visit Oktoberfest here in Latinamerica.

And yesterday, on Sunday the 11th of October I visited Oktoberfest here once again.

But...these 2 Oktoberfests were organized in two different countries. In Brazil - as my visit yesterday and in Argentina - as my visit 10 years ago...Both visits thanks to my cooperation partners here in Latinamerica. In Argentina they organize Oktoberfest in Villa General Belgrano in central Argentina and in Brazil in Blumenau in South-Brazil.

But to get into right kind of carnaval mood let's listen to one samba,  by Alcione "The Marrom". One of her beautiful sambas called "Não deixe o samba morrer". I myself have seen Alcione also live, but not in Brazil - in Finland! By the way, did you know that there are also samba schools in Finland and that they organize every year in the beginning of June Samba Carnaval on the streets of Helsinki? Check here to see, how they dance in the Senate Square in Helsinki singing samba in Finnish...One of my best friends has been dancing samba for years. 

But now we go to the Oktoberfest in Blumenau and begin the story with listening to the Oktoberfest Munich Wiesn Hit 2015 Zaschas "Sauf ma no a Mass" or if you prefer a little bit kind of rockiger Wiesn-Hit couple of years earlier, that is Rockaholixs Buams "Bei uns in Bayern" .

I have visited Oktoberfest in Munich twice, first time in the year 1987 and second time in the year 1995. It was of course an interesting experience with waitresses carrying 5 of those 1 liter beer steins in one hand, so all together 10 at the same time...I have one of this kind at home and of course I bought one in Oktoberfest of Blumenau Brazil yesterday too. A little bit smaller but very nice.

Do you see my "Bier Abwüsch Bändeli" (=wiping away the beer...). Nice joke! The "Bändelis" I bought when in Switzerland visiting the biggest brewery "Feldschlösschen" in Rheinfelden near the German border. Take a visit there too, when visiting the beautiful Switzerland with marvellous mountains and other landscape of the similar kind. They have a really beautiful brewery there too.

Well, in Blumenau it was nice to taste local beers and eat German specialities, like the famous Currywurst from Berlin and Eisenbahn-beer or Wunderbier...

 

What about one Brazilian samba or one Oktoberfest-Rock till the end of my story?

Niin, Brasilia on hyvä kohde suomalaisharjoittelijoille. Ja voisi tänne myös koko Suomen siirtää joksikin aikaa, henkäisemään ja imemään monikultuurisuutta aidossa ympäristössä! Hyvää oppia meille kaikille...

Brasiliassa monikulttuurisuus on arkipäivää, kuten monet teistä varmaan tietävätkin tai vähintäänkin arvaavat. Brasilian vierailuillani keskustelukumppanieni nimistä löytyy niin itäeurooppalaisia kuin myös japanilaisia sukunimiä. Ja myös saksalaisia ja italialaisia.

Monet eurooppalaisia sukujuuria omaavat hakevatkin "EU-kansalaisuutta". Kuulemma kansalaisuuden saaminen voi kestää jopa 10 vuotta, jos kansalaisuutta hakee Brasiliasta käsin. Mutta jos menee paikan päälle sukunsa maille Eurooppaan pariksi viikoksi, irtoaa kansalaisuus aika lailla nopeasti.

Yksi vierailuistani yhteistyökumppanimme luona Curitibassa, harjoittelupaikoista

Olen siis ollut vierailuilla Curitibassa, EDUFI-harjoittelijoiden pääkohteessa Brasiliassa. Aikoinaan CIMO- ja nyt EDUFI- harjoittelun merkeissä on tehty yhteistyötä siellä olevan Brazilian Experience -organisaation kanssa jo viitisen vuotta.  

Yhteistyö on lähtenyt mainiosti käyntiin. Harjoittelupaikkoja on tarjolla niin portugalia hallitseville kuin myös vain englantia osaaville. Niin, toivotaan että yliopistossa opiskelevien lisäksi myös ammattikorkeakoululaiset löytäisivät paremmin CIMOn tarjoamat mahdollisuudet Brasiliassa. Intiaanhan he harjoittelumahdollisuutemme ovatkin jo löytäneet. 

Uskoisin että tiettyjen alojen opiskelijoille täältä löytyisi hyvää oppia, tai että he myös tiettyjen alojen osaamista Suomesta tänne korkealla taitotasolla pystyisivät tuomaan. Sen lisäksi että itse saisivat kotiinviemisiksi uusia ideoita ja rohkeutta elämään. Ja kulttuurikylvyn.

Curitibassa olen vuosien varrella käynyt vierailuilla muun muassa muutamissa ns. avainorganisaatioissa ajatelleen Suomen osaamisalueita. Tai globaalisti keskeisten alojen organisaatioissa.

Kielitaidosta, vierailukohteita

Vierailuilla on muuten ollut hyötyä espanjan kielen taidoistanikin. Osa työnantajista ei Brasiliassa osaa kovin paljon englantia ja tässä tapauksessa olemme käyneet keskustelut niin, että olen itse käyttänyt espanjaa. Joissakin tapauksissa yhteistyökumppanimme Rafaela on toiminut kääntäjänä ja paikalliset työnantajat ovat puhuneet minulle portugalia. Ymmärrän yllättävän hyvin, jos portugalia puhutaan selkeästi ja ei liian nopeasti. Mukavaa pikku kielihaastetta matkassa siis. Nautittavaa.

In order to relax first, let us begin with the music from one of the Latinamerican countries...

That is Argentina and "Todo cambia" or "Everything is changing" by Mercedes Sosa. 

 

What a song, what an artist! The voice of Latinamerica, they say...I heard the song for the firs time in the 80's. And then also almost saw Mercedes Sosa live in Hamburg, but though not...And I also missed her when she was visiting Finland. Read about that afterwards...maybe I was traveling then too...

Anyway my first info ever about the all-time greatest artists of Latinamerican music I found in Turku/Åbo Finland in the local music library...

 

But all in all I think, it is nice to speak different languages. Or if not to speak at least try to understand.  

As I am now in Brazil, I have used the possibility to try to understand Brazilian Portuguese on basis of my Spanish abilities. And it works quite well, if I am listening very carefully and if people do not speak too quick. I am happy about that! But let's hear music from Brazil now, so also you can have the possibility to try to understand Portuguese. Here groovy Hip Hop Music from Emicida. Thanks for the tips, my Brazilian colleagues...

Well...on basis of Spanish you can understand Italian and also French, at least in the written form. I have taken part in French and Italian courses. Did you know that? I remember that i spoke fluent Italian during Oktoberfest in München in the 90's....Anyway so I thought after couple of one liter beers...Let's see what happens tomorrow in Oktoberfest in Blumenau...

Before I go to other Roman languages, I have the need to listen to the music from the country of high mountains. A Must. As we spoke here about countries where there are also mountains. Though not so high than in this country. That is Chile, the Andes and the group will be Los Jaivas, Los Jaivas 50 years! WOW! 

 

I saw them 2 years ago in Helsinki region in Finland. So my dream came true...I wrote at that time also an article about Chilean music. Will show up also here, when I arrive back to Finland.


...But what comes to French, I have always wondered why they do not kind of stop the words in the halfway. The last part of the words aren't anyway pronounced. So I though. But my Swiss friend told to me that they are pronounced (even if I do not hear it...). By the way, my Brazilian colleague told me a nice story how they in France during the French course tried to form words in French. As they speak one of the roman languages everyhing went well till halfway. But then, the endings at the end were so and so she said...In other words they used their imagination and there were some times too much imagination...

...As it is now weekend, I have free time from work. And as I already said above, I will visit tomorrow thanks to my Brazilian colleagues Blumenau and the Oktoberfest. I will probably hear there German, and have the possibility to speak it. Nice! And actually I already did today in the centre of Curitiba in one German Restaurant.

 

Well, if you understand German, you understand also Flemish and if you are lucky also Schwyzerdütsch. That is German spoken in Switzerland. With good imagination you can understand it every now and then, I have noticed. And German in Austria, it is even easier to understand...

But now we will finish this story with nice, very melancholy song of the Mexican Lila Downs. 

Take your time to cry a little bit...for all the good (or some sad?) memories from Latinamerica!

Copacabana, but for me...for buying records not for lying in the sun...

Sorry, I am not a person for lying in the sun as some of you know...not for me. The seashore I like, but doing something else than...

When visiting Brazil and Rio de Janeiro for the first time almost 15 years ago, I of course visited "all the necessary" attractions of Rio: Corcovado with the Crist, Sugarloaf (Pão de Açúcar), Maracaña, Ipanema beach and I lived in a hotel in Copacabana. "Rio Pure" in 5 days...

 
The issue which from Rio despite Maracaña have stayed in my mind until these days was the visit in one of the local favelas together with the guide, of course...

But speaking of Ipanema we have now listen to the famous "Girl from Ipanema". Here the Astrud Gilberto version in English. Nostalgic video, indeed. Here another version, partly in Portuguese and with Astrud Gilberto, João Gilberto and Stan Getz. Oh, how I like the saxophone...very smooth...and Portuguese is perfect for the song. Or what do you think? 

By the way, once I had the possibility to listen to Stan Getz - live here in Finland. It was it in the 80's in Pori Jazz Festival . Very nice experience. I found the Brazilian inluenced Stan Getz LP in the LP-shelf. These "old-fashioned LPs" are once again trendy among the collectors. One thing I know for sure, sometimes nothing can compete with the cover art of some LPs for sure! CDs - they are nothing...really.

So what I did in Copacabana was walking along Cobacana beach and doing observations, and stepping by to some record shops aiming to buy for me and for my husband some local music. I found some nice 60's recocords for my husband, who is an expert of 60's music and some records for me too. 

Do you know the 60's rock of Brazil? It is called Jovem Guarda or the style which became popularly known as "iê-iê-iê"?

Here some info about "Jovem Guarda" in Portuguese (you can find info in English too). The first idole of "Jovem Guarda" was Roberto Carlos. Most of his songs Roberto  wrote in partnership with his friend, also singer and songwriter Erasmo Carlos. Here for you the "Pout Pourri" Jovem Guarda of Roberto Carlos. The Potpourri is worth seeing, so do not miss it! You will sink into the 60's mood.

Well, I have Brazilian Music in my record collection too as mentioned above and more will be in the near future...

Internships abroad: In Brazil and of course elsewhere in Latinamerica too

Well, Brazil...Finnish students make their traineeship in Brazil through Brazilian Experience in Curitiba. 

 

We have had cooperation already 7 years years, more or less. And everything has worked out very well. The Finnish students, until now 110 Finnish students, have made their traineeship period in Brazil. Here you can read some of their testimonials as as well as of students coming from other parts of the world. And here some thoughts of trainees for you to read.

Changes in our Traineeship Programmes

Until now we have send students and newly graduates to make traineeships in whatever field possible. But as we are now sharpening the internships, the form of our internship programs will change into more like importing and exporting expertise. And to send trainees to globally important fields. 

The aim is to sharpen the traineeships on offer to increase the competitiveness of Finns. The aim is to deepen the sustainability. And the aim is to expand and deepen understanding between cultures and to continue on work related language training. At the same time, we also export Finnish know-how to our partner countries as well as import expertise from these countries to Finland. If interested, you can read here more.

As in article, for more than two decades, we have been making Finnish students more international in response to working-life needs. Among the many tools of internationalization, practical training abroad has served its purpose very well.

Working life requires diverse language skills, but also other many competences fostered by international experience. During the last decade, trainees have increasingly been sent to other than English-speaking countries, and over the last years in increasing numbers also beyond Europe.

According to the survey (2014) by the Confederation of Finnish Industries, internationalisation has given rise to a demand for much more diverse language skills in Finnish working life. English skills are required on all organisational levels and in all kinds of duties. But the needs do not end there. There is now an increasing demand for personnel commanding other languages, too.

Of course there are also other organizations in Brazil managing internships and voluntary programs, to name one of them for example ABIPE in Sao Paulo.
